In a heartwarming display of community spirit and athletic camaraderie, Delavan-Darien High School's alumni from various generations returned to their alma mater for a special cause on Saturday, April 13, 2024. The alumni basketball tournament, organized in honor of Bob Beighton, a beloved former basketball coach and member in the community, successfully raised $5,000 for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Fund.
"Kyle Polzin, DDSD Athletics & Activities Director, expressed pride and gratitude, stating, "This tournament is a testament to the strength of our community and our collective commitment to making a difference. We are thrilled to contribute to the MACC Fund in Bob Beighton's name, honoring his legacy and supporting a vital cause."
Beighton's Backcourt Battle, held at the DDHS gymnasium, featured three exciting rounds of basketball, showcasing DDSD staff and DDHS alumni players from classes spanning 1997 to 2024. The Cowboys team emerged victorious after a series of closely contested games, claiming the first annual championship title of the tournament.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the event was not just about basketball; it included halftime contests and performances by the DDHS pep band, which provided entertainment and kept the energy high throughout the games.
"We are immensely proud of our alumni and community for coming together to support such an important cause," said Adam Alter, DDHS Social Studies Teacher. "This event not only honored Bob Beighton's legacy but also highlighted the strength and generosity of our Delavan-Darien community in supporting childhood cancer research."
The funds raised will be directly donated to the MACC Fund, contributing to their ongoing efforts in childhood cancer and related blood disorder research. The commitment shown by the Delavan-Darien community reflects a deep dedication to making a difference in the lives of children battling these devastating diseases.
