Course Information: This is a year-long course that requires selection of both semesters: S1 and S2. The course is an introduction to college critical thinking, reading and writing. It will emphasize the following English skills: critical reading and writing with emphasis on the textual analysis of a variety of genres (both fiction and nonfiction), critical argumentation, the writing process, and conventions of academic prose. Students who earn a 70% or better in both semesters will earn 3 college credits. This course is treated like other ECCP courses. If a student fails the course, the student must reimburse the District for the cost of the course ($315).
Outcomes:
Read, interpret, evaluate, and critically analyze literary and nonliterary texts that recognize the breadth and depth of literature
Demonstrate critical reading and thinking skills
Formulate an academic argument
Create a strong, grounded thesis
Address a range of audiences effectively
Employ writing conventions expected of academic prose (clarity and precision of grammar and
mechanics)
Participate effectively in small and large group discussions to create new meaning
Prerequisites: To qualify to take this course, a student must have attained a 22 on the ACT or have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and must have taken either College Prep or English 11. Students taking this course should be planning on attending a two or four-year post-secondary education program.
