Delavan-Darien High School was strongly represented at the Southern Lakes Conference Academic Bowl. While the Comets did not win the event, they competed strongly and had the Language Arts team win the conference battle, while also having two students attain the highest scores in their individual testing category (Kate Pehkonen in British Literature & Breanna Yartey in Chemistry).
We would also like to congratulate and thank Ms. Samantha Carter as our Academic Bowl Advisor of our 2021 team. Ms. Carter has continually worked to support our students to continue to grow academically. This year's competition was virtual due to the pandemic, which required more communication with both participants and other schools in the conference. Ms. Carter handled all these responsibilities in stride.
We would also like to thank Ms. Lauren Gurholt, Mr. Nick Marsh, and Mr. Nick Stark for helping out on the night of the event (Feb. 8, 2021). They supported students by proctoring exams and facilitating the team events. Their professionalism supports our students daily!
The Academic Bowl consists of individual assessments in social studies (geography, US history, world history & civics), science (biology, chemistry, physical science & physics), math (algebra, algebra II, geometry & advanced mathematics), and language arts (American literature, British literature, world literature & potpourri). Once the individual assessments are completed, students then become a 4-person team in either social studies, science, language arts, mathematics or current events, to score team points in the oral competition. Final placement of each school is determined by adding their combined individual assessment scores with their team scores.
